Numeracy

2019/20 NUMERACY STRATEGY

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT:

Foster a positive and attractive environment which celebrates numeracy:

  • KS3 Termly Numeracy Stars.
  • KS4 Dr Frost leader board.
  • All years to take part in the UKMT Junior and Intermediate solo and team challenges.
    • Junior Solo Challenge – 30/4/20 (entry deadline – 27/3/20)
    • Intermediate Solo Challenge – 6/2/20 (entry deadline – 13/1/20)
    • Team Challenge – date tbc

               Memory retrieval practice:

  • From January, run the Numeracy Ninjas programme in KS3 to address gaps in students’ mental calculation strategies and foster the fluency required to fully access GCSE maths concepts when they move to Key Stage 4 study.
  • No calculators used in Key Stage 3 to perform non-complex calculations using the four operations.

Be aware of the mathematical techniques used in other subjects and support other departments to foster a consistent approach to numeracy.

  • Provide CPD on topics with relevant teachers informed by the Numeracy Audit.

OTHER DEPARTMENTS:

Complete the Numeracy Audit in order to receive tailored support from the Mathematics department.

Have an appreciation for the importance of a shared approach to improving numeracy through mathematics department-led CPD.

Ensure shared mathematical approaches to performing written calculations using the four operations as directed by the mathematics department.

Explore possibilities for cross-curricular links through R.E.A.L lessons.
